A college baseball coach read in a sports magazine that the average fastball speed of all the pitchers who competed last year in the college world series was 90.4 mph. The 16 pitchers who tried out for the school’s team this year averaged 88.2 mph, and the standard deviation was 3.4 mph. What is the value of the test statistic?

There is no value.
Any good pitcher or coach (or batter) will tell you speed is not as important as movement.
That’s why people with fastballs in the low 90s with lots of movement like Petitte, Maddox, etc.. are much more successful than people with high 90s straight fastballs like Kyle Farnsworth.
standard deviation being 3.4 already proves that its statistically even.Even if it were higher as you say in the ws,then wouldnt that mean possibly the cream rose to the top.The best team likely had a few pitchers that had the best fastballs in the league and that amounted to a few more statistical mph/velocity in the stats
