Adult A.D.D and no medication?

pupz00001 asked:

I am a 21 year old college student. I was diagnosed with A.D.D. when I was seven, but I haven’t taken any medication for it since I was 14. (My parents took me odd the medicine because some kid in out town committed ******* while taking Ritalin). I stayed busy in high school working a full time job, playing sports, participating in clubs, while still managing to remain on honor roll ( I have no idea how) Anyways, now that I am in college, I am noticing that the A.D.D. is affecting my ability to concentrate and study and function in social situations. I think that I need to go back on some sort of medication, but am worried about talking to my doctor. I’m afraid that he is going to think that I am just trying to get some Adderal or something to help me study for finals (some stay awake if you will) I’m not embarrassed about having A.D.D. or anything, I just don’t want my doctor getting the wrong idea. Any advice??

My 13 yr old son is on Adderall 15mg and it works wonderfully for him. I think you should explain it to your doctor the way you explained it on here. You don’t sound drug seeking. Adderall is not a quick fix though. It takes a full week to get used to. Good luck on your finals.

Try asking for Welbutrin or Strattera. These work well in adults and are NON-stimulant meds. I started taking Strattera for ADD in my (cough, cough) 40’s and have seen a big difference. Like any medication that effects your brain chemistry (stimulants and psych meds) you increase your risk of *******. You mights also look into an ADD support group or consider starting one at your college.
