Calling ALL BASKETBALL Gurus, I’m learning basketball?

Mranda G asked:

Ok ill start you off, im not a COMPLETE sports doof, infact I know and Play Baseball and Football very well, but Basketball was something I played from time to time, but never really got the PROPER rules and strategies and stuff. Ok I know the basics, 2 pointers, 3 pointers, foul shots etc. I just wanted you guys to answer a few of my questions

To start myself off, I picked the Raptors and My favorite player is Chrish Bosh.

Now I know Chris Bosh plays Power Foward

There are 5 positions right?

Center
Power Foward
Small Foward
Point Guard
Shooting Guard? Right?

So where does EACH position stand on offense, and defense. And explain what every little term means when you explain. Also why is that you cant stand in the paint for more than 3 seconds? What is the reason behind that?

Also explain a foul a little bit. A foul is excessive unessarcy contact right? My main thing is, why is reaching in a foul? and what exactly is the blocking foul for a defensive player? And….When do you send a player to the line for a foul shot? I notice on certain fouls they dont shoot. And. Could you guys list all of the divisons please. Is it like the EAST VS WEST in the NBA FINALS? Is toronto east or west? Also how is Chris Bosh doing this season?

If you can, can you compare Basketball positions and rules, to the ones in Baseball or Football, so I can grasp it better.

I dont mean to be so stupid, but I really liked basketball and always wanted to know.

Go to wikipedia.org type basketball, learn from that, then type NBA and learn from that.

you are right about the first 2. It depends where you stand because it differs from the play you run.. a foul is when you hit the other player.. it just is.. when u block them illegally..if they are shooting when you foul them or the team has 7 fouls..East and west.. yes basically representatives.. toronto is east.. he is good he played in the olympics..you cant its different..point guard is sorta like the quarterback they make plays most of the time….

This is going to take some time.

First of all yes…there are five positions. and you got them all correct. Where does each position stand on offense/defense. It depends on what offense and what defense your team is running. General basics for zone defense (this is a defense similar to a zone in football, where each player take a certain zone on the court and covers players that fall into their zone). Zone defense has the center in the middle just forward of the basket, with the two forwards on wings about 3 feet from the left and right of the center. The guards position themselves between the center and forwards about 5 feet out to guard the perimeter. Zone defense is actually very very difficult to do correctly, it involves alot of shifting and communication, but it is the best to do when there is one or two great players on the opposing team.
On offense the positions vary quite a bit based on what offensive play you are running. Generally speaking your forwards stay low and in front of the basket. You are not allowed to stay in the ‘paint’ for more than 3 seconds in an effort to speed up the game, it’s just a rule that’s added so that big guys like Shaquille O’neal don’t just stand in the middle and wait for a pass, they would be too dominant based on size, not skill.

Fouls are actually just unnecessary contact that impede the offensive player from progressing. Reaching in on it’s own is not a foul, reaching in and bumping the offensive player is. Fouls that require shooting are when the player is in the act of shooting, or when the team exceeds the alloted fouls given per quarter.

As far as the other information regarding the Raptors and Chris Bosh, and the division etc. Check NBA.com it has all that information. Hope this helps.
