Do I need to wear a knee brace when I return to sports after a second knee surgery?

Gimpy asked:

This year has been the worst for my left knee. I tore my ACL in Jan. had reconstructive surgery in March. Tore the cartilage in my knee in June had surgery on October 22nd. Should I wear a brace when I go back to sports to prevent any more trauma to my knee? I play golf and basketball.

YES - it sounds like you are very prone to recurring injury in your knee - It would be very wise to protect yourself in every way possible from this happening again as it is an awful injury. Wear the knee brace and hopefully your knee will be fine :)

    hi
if your surgeon has recommended it, i would take his advice, but if this is a decision that is up to you then here are some things you might like to consider:

evidence shows that knee braces dont actually prevent injury, but they do make you knee rely on them too much rather than the muscles it needs to protect it from injury, meaning that braces result in bad muscle patterning, and actually make you more susceptible to injury

you have already had these injuries, and you will always be more susceptible to them, a brace won’t stop this

some surgeons like them, others dont, but they generally agree it doesnt make that much difference to recover ad future injury.

however, the one thing they can offer is the feeling of strength in the knee, to give us confidence, regardless of what is actually happening, they make our knees feel solid.

so, in conclusion, evidence shows they dont really make a difference, and can actually be a hinderance, but if you would feel safer with one, or have been recommended it by a surgeon and consider it worth it, get one!

hope you can get back to your activities!
