No, they’re general physicians with particular knowledge in sports related injuries. Only surgeons perform surgeries, different kinds do different operations. But you need to specialize in things like surgery in order to do them.
I think so.. When players get injured on the court or field, their sent to see a physician right away! That doctor does his/her’s own analysis and determines if the player should see a specialist to see if the surgeon thinks surgery is needed!-Make sense?
there’s a sports physician near my house whose office is at home and is also a chiropractor. so im guessing he doesn’t do surgeries if he is able to use his house as his office for both professions.
In order to become an MD you will have to do a variety of rotations and get basic knowledge in all areas of medicine. Then you can specialise.
However some of the best sports medicine doctors can do orthopaedic surgery.
No. There’s really no specialty of sports medicine, though you’ll see a lot of orthopedic surgeons advertise that as a subspecialty. But then, orthopedics involves not only knives but a lot of carpentry type tools, too. You might look into physiatry, if it isn’t specifically the sports or the athletes that intrigue you.
There’s a subspecialty in internal medicine focused on health issues of athletes and they can’t perform surgeries. However, orthopedists perform a lot of common surgeries from sports related injuries (like knee replacement surgery).
