I think so…especially for gymnastics and swimming.
I know the Romanians start their kids young (4 or 5 years) in gymnastics and Aussies learn to swim from primary school (5 or 6 years) and hold big swimming carnivals every year.

it depends on the athletes and what country they are from. For example, in China, where training is regulated by the government, they start training at around 3 or 4. Even in the US, they start training from a young age, usually around elementary school. However, there are few exceptions where someone with a lot of natural talent and dedication could start training about 11 or 12 and actually make it to the Olympics. It rarely happens, but there has been some cases.

Often around 10 years old, or younger. I read that one of the female gymnasts on the US team had been working with her coach for 10 years now, and I believe she’s just 16.

What do you think the average age of the athletes is? I’d say it’s about 20. To me, 20 is pretty darn young still.

yeah. my friend was gonna be in junior olympics and shes been at it since 10, but she wasnt good enough to be in the olympics (shes 17 now) actually, theyre twins. they were both in it. but they quit for reasons i wont say. lol

you can be in the olympics at age 16 so im sure they do start young

Mostly- they normally start in small clubs or teams though before progressing higher up.

  6. Go Michael Phelps =D!on 19 Aug 2005 at 10:09 am

It doesnt matter. Everyone starts differently. You might have a chinese child of the age of 5 starting to swim. And then you see Michael Phelps at the age of 11 is when he started and he entered the olympics at the age of 15. So yeah, it depends on your persionality and if your determined.
