After comparing the characters of both franchises I’ve found many characters that are very similar. I’m going to set up match-ups and why I matched the certain characters up. Then you will judge A) if the match-ups work and B) Who would win in each one.

Luke Skywalker vs. Frodo Baggins
Young men living simple lives at their homes. Both are orphaned at young ages. When their homes are attacked by the forces of evil they befriend an old wise warrior, and they go on a quest to a group of people that face against the evil. Both appoint themselves to tackle great odds, and become heroes.

Han Solo vs. Aragorn
Rugged men deemed as rogues. They meet the main heroes at a bar where they join them on their journey. In the end they help in the war against the forces of evil, and became more then anyone expected them to be.

Leia Organa vs. Arwen
Princesses raised in peaceful lands. All they want is peace, but can fight when the situation demands it. They fall in love with the roguish heroes.

Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Gandalf
Wise men who are members of orders that protect their worlds. They are later deemed as “Old Wizards”. They are befriended by the young heroes and then help them on their quest. While on the quest they give their lives battling somebody evil, and lose their lives to save their friends. Even after death though they return to help the heroes emerge victorious against the forces of evil.

Yoda vs. Galadriel
Ancient people who are more powerful then they appear on the surface. After the young heroes lose their friends and mentors they meet these two who act as their new guiding lights. Also, both live in and love nature.

Lando Calrissian vs. Boromir
Great leaders who deeply care for their people who are under threat from the forces of evil. They aid the heroes but then turn traitorous, turning on the heroes. In the end though they repent and help them fight the bad guys, saving the heroes’ lives.

Chewbacca vs. Gimli
Burly heroes who have a vast size difference from the main heroes. They are tough, and good in a fight, but in reality have stout hearts. They both are trusted friends of the roguish hero, and are present and several turning point events.

Wedge Antilles vs. Legolas
Heroes who are the sons of important people. They are members of the groups who fight against the forces of evil, and are present at several important battles.

Biggs Darklighter vs. Samwise Gamgee
The best friends of the main heroes, who are from the same place they are.

C-3PO vs. Merry
The more serious of the series’ comedy duos. They try to aim the other members of the comedy duos in the smarter direction.

R2-D2 vs. Pippin
The more funny members of the comedy duos.

Wicket W. Warrick vs. Treebeard
Members of a nature race who have their people help turn the tides for the forces of good in the wars against the forces of evil.

Jar Jar Binks vs. Gollum
Odd creatures who are outcasts from society. When they first cross paths with the heroes they become their guides. The heroes are at first reluctant of them, but in the end trust them.

Grand Moff Tarkin vs. Mouth of Sauron
Powerful members of the legions of evil. They are deep in the inner circles and are placed in charge of important places. Tarkin of the Death Star, and Mouth of Sauron of Barad-Dur.

Boba Fett vs. Grima Wormtongue
Right hand men to important members of the evil side.

General Grievous vs. Gothmog
Great commanders in the ranks of evil. They are both vicious, but also sickly. One being a cyborg because of an accident giving him breathing problems, the other suffering from a disease similar to elaphantitis. Both are great strategists and fighters but in the end are felled by the heroes after losing some limbs.

Darth Maul vs. Lurtz
Vicious villains that don’t talk very much. They have complete loyalty to their masters, and are extreme killing machines. Also both wear intimidating paint on their faces. Both have a final showdown against the heroes in the first movies of their respective saga. Both fell a hero, before they themselves are chopped apart by another hero.

Count Dooku vs. Saruman
Members of the groups that try to maintain peace, but join the dark lords in order to attain greater power. They are placed in charge of building armies for the dark lord, and try to turn other members of their orders to their sides. Dooku tried to turn Obi-Wan, and Saruman tried to turn Gandalf. They commanded armies for the dark lords for a long time, and before they can be captured are betrayed by one of their allies and killed.

Men who were once in great positions, one a Jedi, the other a king. They were both great with a blade and in the mystical arts. Eventually they joined the dark lords after being promised greater power. Because of their betrayals they were transformed, one into a cyborg, the other a wraith. They became top members in t

Palpatine vs. Sauron
The dark lords of their respective worlds. They were both in great positions to maintain order, one the supreme chancellor, the other a Maia. They both deceived the forces of good to attain power. They manipulated several people into joining them, and in the end met their ends.
In response to Colleen’s comment I’m not trying to accuse somebody ripping somebody off, it’s just that I love both franchises and think they are similar. And I listed the Star Wars characters first since I learned about Star Wars first and wanted a look of conformity.

In response to lupinesi…, I am more or less comparing the movie versions of The Lord of the Rings characters to the Star Wars characters. I am still in the middle of reading the books.
