The crappie are a very fast growing species of fish and they go by many aliases such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch , pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth. During the summer peak period the speckled bass food chain is at it’s peak and the  strawberry bass metabolism has reached it’s peak. The transition from the cold water period  to the warm water period is complete. Hatching insects have left millions of husks on the surface. Rooted aquatic plants have reached the surface and they have begun to bend forward and provide excellent cover for the paper mouth food chain is at it’s peak and the  papermouth.

The strawberry bass food chain is at it’s peak and the  white perch is very predicable during the peak summer period because the will move far as long as their food source remains plentiful. You can catch crappie during this period with crappie fishing jigs tipped with a variety of soft plastic grubs, or crappie live bait such as crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows, small crayfish, small shad, wax worms, and even mussel meat.

In Natural lakes deep weeds will form distinct edges and calico bass food chain is at it’s peak and the  papermouth will roam here all summer long. If go crappie fishing along these edges using a slip bobber fishing rig with a variety of crappie baits such as a crappie fishing jig tipped with a plastic grub and a wax worm, a crappie jig tipped with a large fat shiner or a fathead minnow, or use a crappie hook tipped with a small crayfish as crappie live bait. You will  need to adjust the depth of your slip bobber until you start catching crappie.

In large reservoirs calico bass food chain is at it’s peak and the  speckled bass follow the large shad schools gorging on them all summer long. Catching crappie during the peak summer period on these waters could not be easier as long as you find the shad schools.  You can go bait fishing for crappie near the shad schools by crappie

Bait Fishing : A83 Special Fishing Report On Determining Age of Crappies And Speckled Perch Visit Our Website For Details!

crappie are one of the most plentiful gamefish that are stocked in all the lower 48 states and they go by many aliases such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappies, strawberry bass, and paper mouth. To determine the age of a pole crappies You catch while you are bait fishing is not an exact science but there is a way to calculate your strawberry bass caught with a variety of different crappie baits. Age and growth rates for crappie caught while bait fishing can be attributed too two factors which are the environment and genetics.

In our article today we are going to discuss the method of determining the age of pole crappies. The next time you catch a crappie while bait fishing take a look at it’s scales. You can determine the age of any crappie you catch if you learn to read it’s scales. The theory behind reading scales to determine age is based upon assuming that the scales grow proportionately to a fishes length, and this relationship nearly always holds true.

During the slow or no growth periods such as in the cold water winter months the rings or what is called the circuli will be narrowly spaced. Fast growth periods will generate a widely spaced circuli. Year marks called annuli show clearly if you use a magnifying glass for inspection. To take a measurement, you want to measure from the center of the scale called the focus which is horizontally located at the bottom of the scale. The focus point looks like a circle and is your starting point for your measurement. You measure from the outer circumference of the focus and start counting the annuli until you come to the furthest most outer. Annuli. Count each annuli as 1 year.

There are some pole crappies that scale counting is not accurate. For example in warm climates such as Florida counting scales will not work because of the accelerated growth rate. In warm climates it is better to read the otoliths bone. This is a extremely accurate way to determine the age of a strawberry bass but is much more difficult because the bone must be dissected to determine the age. You may need to use the otoliths bone also when there is a extremely slow growth rate.

Well that concludes my article about Calico Bass. Have a great day!

weedless spoons

No Exit Popup Old School Bass Fishing Secrets Course

A weedless spoon can be a very effective method to catch largemouth bass under certain conditions. If bass are holding tight in dense weed beds using weedless spoons is a very effective way to catch largemouth bass. Weedless spoons used to be a very popular way to catch bass but nowadays they are only used when bat fishing for large mouth bass in heavy vegetation or brush cover.

Weedless spoons are made of metal or plastic and both are very effective but react differently when retrieved through he water. For example metal spoons work better if you intend to fan cast an area because they can be cast much further then plastic bass spoons. The metal spoons are only used if you intend to bait fish for bass sub – surface because metal spoons will sink rapidly after casting them. In order to go bait fishing with metal spoons effectively they must be retrieved faster then plastic bass spoons. Unfortunately one draw back to metal spoons is that largemouth bass tend to strike them short, by only hitting the trailing plastics attached to the bass lure. To fix this problem only set the hook after you feel the weight of the bass on your line.

If you plan to fish the top of weed beds or brush then plastic spoons work much better the metal spoons, because they do not sink as fast as the metal spoon. Also plastic spoons are virtually weedless because the hook is always facing upward when these spoons are retrieved through the water.

To fish a skitter and drop retrieve make a long cast and start your fast retrieve with your rod tip pointing in a upward position, before the weedless spoon has a chance to sink. Retrieve fast enough to see the spoon skipping across the top of the surface or just below. When you start to pass over a pocket in the weed bed stop your retrieve and allow the spoon to sink into the pocket. If a largemouth bass is following you spoon it will probably strike your bass spoon as soon as it starts to drop so be ready.

Bait fishing: A84 Amazing Fishing Information On Identifing Crappies And Speckled Perch Details Here!

Speckled Bass

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

Bait fishing: article 84
crappie will be called names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouths. The name paper mouth is very fitting for the crappie. This nick name is very fitting of a crappie that is caught while bait fishing because there mouths are paper thin and the hook can pull out very easy so you need to be very careful to not over do it when you set the hook. This fact alone makes it very difficult to land a large pole crappie.

Both White and black crappie speckled bass look very similar but there are a few different identification marks. Both white crappie and black crappie have dark – olive or golden or brownish backs. The white white perch look much lighter then the black papermouth when caught while bait fishing. During the spawn it is hard to tell male white and black white perch apart because the male whit crappie will darken like the black crappie during the spawning period.

One easy way to tell the white strawberry bass from the black crappie is by counting the number of spines located at the dorsal fin. White  strawberry bass will have 5 to 7 spines, while  the black speckled bass will have 7 to 8 spines. The white speckled perch will have a have a shorter distance between the dorsal fin first spine to a point between the eyes, then the black speckled perch. The white speckled perch takes a more “s” or
hump shape then the black papermouth where the back rises from the head. The black calico bass has a more round shape.

Both white pole crappie and black white perch, are built for speed and maneuverability. They move in cover very easily because of their thin bodies. In cover you catch crappies while bait fishing fairly easy if you use the right crappie baits. The white speckled perch and the black calico bass are not the only speices of crappie. For years white and black speckled perch have been cross breeding to make a very stable hybrid white perch population. Also many hybrids have been raised in captivity for stocking. They have
been stocked in new habitat locations throughout the Untied States to create new speckled perch habitat areas.

I have had a great time writing this article we hope you enjoyed our information about Pole Crappies. Have a great day!

Bait Fishing: Article 77 Key Fishing Information About Sub-Surface Bass Plugs Plugs And Largemouth Bass Anglers Details Here!

Published by admin under Timed Finals

Bass crank baits

Old School Bass Fishing Family Secrets

Many largemouth bass anglers use a variety of sub-surface bass lures on a regular basis. There are three main types of sub – surface plugs that work well when bait fishing for largemouth bass. The three types are crank baits, Minnow baits, and vibrating plugs. All sub – surface plugs are very effective to catch largemouth bass in the summer months when the largemouth bass are active and a faster retrieve works better. Sub – surface plugs are not the best choice when fishing cold water with one exception. Bass crank baits are some time used for cold water bait fishing presentation using a method called the stop and go. Al you need to do to fish the method is cast your bass crank bait out and retrieve it slowly then stop for a second or two, start your slow retrieve again and then stop again. Repeat all the way through your cast and retrieve.

Bass crank baits are probably the most popular of the sub – surface bass plugs used by largemouth bass fisherman. Crank baits typically have a relatively short , deep body and a wide broad lip that cause the bass bait to wobble through he water. If you attach or imbed a rattle into the body you will make these bass sub – surface plugs even more deadly. You can buy largemouth bass fishing crank baits that have preset diving depths. Normally these depths range from as shallow as 2ft to a max of 30 ft. Crank baits usually are only recommended to bait fish for bass in warm water fishing presentations but if you use the slow stop and go retrieve you can use the bass crank baits in cold water they can be quite effective.

are another popular summer time large moth bass bait fishing presentation that is use quit often by bass anglers. Minnow bass baits are typically designed long and slender and have a narrow lip that gives them a wiggle type wobble. Minnow sub – surface bass plugs are typically used where you need a shallow largemouth bass bait fishing presentation. Some minnow sub – surface bass plugs are designed with a very long and narrow lip and are used for deep water bass bait presentations. You can also add weights to these bass lures to go and stay deep. The bass plugs are designed to be negative buoyant so you can add weights to keep them right at the depth you are retrieving even if you stop your retrieve which is a good way to attract curious largemouth bass and entice them to strike your minnow bass plug.

Vibrating sub – surface bass plugs can be fished at any depth because they sink and they are excellent for any back trolling or down rigger trolling where stay at a predetermined depth. These baits are used quite frequently when walleye fishing but they are also quite effective when you are largemouth bass fishing in some bait fishing situations. These sub –surface bass plugs have very tight wiggle pattern that generates vibrations through the water that can be felt by large mouth bass from some distances away. These Bass baits are also a good way to discover new bass fishing habitat because you can cover a lot of water in a shot period of time.

Well that concludes my article about Bass Crank Baits. Have a great day!

Bait Fishing: Article 75 Key Fishing Information About Bait Fishing Largemouth Bass Click Here!

bass fisherman

No Exit Popup Old School Bass Fishing Secrets Course

Soft plastics ar by far the most popular largemouth bass baits used by bass fisherman nationwide. Soft plastic large mouth bass lures are as close to natural bass baits that you can get. They look and feel like real largemouth bass food when bass hit your bait.

They can be rigged so the hook is imbedded in the plastic so you can fish dense cover, common when you are using Texas bass fishing rigs, or with what is know as a Carolina bass fishing rig, where the hook or hooks are exposed. Carolina large mouth bass fishing rigs are normally fished on a clean bottom, and used in thick cover because of the exposed hooks. The Carolina rig is very enticing to large mouth bass because of how the fishing rig is designed. A slip sinker is attached well up your fishing line and when lowered through the water the soft plastic fishing lure seems to almost float and flutter because it is dropping through the water much slower then the slip sinker which attracts the large month bass.

Another popular way to fish soft plastics is by using a small jig head. This methods of fishing for bass is intended for a very slow largemouth bass bait fishing presentation. Fishing with soft plastic fishing lures and a jig head works great for known largemouth bass habitat locations but is not a good fishing method if you intended to fish news bass fishing waters. Soft plastic bass baits work well in cold water so spring and early summer are the best time of the year to use them. We are going to describe in the last three paragraphs how to make a Texas large mouth bass fishing rig, and a simple Carolina largemouth bass fishing rig.

To make a Texas bass fishing rig you will need the following fishing tackle. Start by pushing the thin tip end of a bullet sinker up your line first, then tie on a offset nightcrawler hook. Next push your soft plastic bass fishing bait on to your offset starting about 3/8” inch from the fat end of the soft plastic bait, and bring the hook out the side. Then twist the hook 180 degrees and push the hook back into the soft plastic bass bait deep enough to almost penetrate the other side but not pushing through.

To make a simple Carolina bass fish rig that has a strait hook you will need to start with the following fishing tackle. You will need a strait bass fishing hook, brass sinker, two way swivel, and a shinny bead. The brass sinker and the glass bead are used to create a “clinking” noise when falling through the water. This noise attracts the largemouth bass. Slide the brass sinker up the line with the pointed end going on first. Next slide the bead up the line., then tie the two way swivel on the line . Next tie on a 12” leader that already has a bass fishing hook attached on one end to the open eye of the two way swivel. Then push a soft plastic bass bait such as what is called acraw about 3/8” from the top of the fat end of the soft plastic bass bait.

We hope the information in this article about large Mouth Bass. Have a great day!

Bait Fish: A70 Special Report On Catching Catfish In Shallow Lakes And Reservoirs! And Info On Bait Fishing Details Here!

gizzard shad bait

Shallow lakes and reservoirs often have featureless basins and shallow shorelines. You can catch channel catfish by drift fishing the large basins using cut baits such as gizzard shad, creek chubs, and shiners as you catfish bait selection. A good bait fishing catfish rig for drift fishing would be a three way swivel rig. Use a sinker large enough to stay on the bottom and a 5/0 to 7/0 hook.

To fish shallow reservoirs and lakes at night head to the shallow shorelines because bait fish will concentrate at night there. If you are fishing in a boat locate edge lines where soft pan bottom turns into sand or rock. Drop anchor here and cast your catfish bait towards the shore line. You can also attract channel catfish to your area by dropping a underwater fishing light and chumming the area. You can catch channel catfish while your bait fishing with a simple slip bobber rig, or by fishing tight line.

Cover edges in shallow water are also excellent areas to catch channel catfish because the channel cats are attracted to abundant numbers of bait fish such as shad , minnows moving in and out of the cover. They are also attracted to shallow flat areas adjacent to cover that are sandy and have a good population of mussels. These areas are extremely good under winding conditions. Use bait fish such as gizzard shad cut into pieces for your catfish bait. Or if you find a adjacent flat that has a population of mussels use the mussels as bait. You can also use soiled mussels by extracting the mussel meat and let it soak in sour milk for about two day prior to your fishing trip. Just a note, channel catfish love mussels so do not overlook them as a catfish bait.

If you are going to target roaming channel catfish on large featureless flats, try to fish with a three way swivel rig fishing rig, while drift fishing because your catfish bait will be suspended slightly off the bottom. Use live bait such as creek chubs or shiners, or cut bait such as gizzard shad as your catfish bait selection. Make sure your sinker selection is large enough that it constantly bumps bottom as you are drifting. To locate a good drift fishing starting point on these flats look for a slight look for points that have a slight depth change.

We hope the information here has bin helpful about about Gizzard Shad Bait. Have a great day!
