What is Jankovic doing in the Hopman Cup?

steo asked:

In serbia’s second fixture she was forced to retire from her singles match against Tatiana Golovin after 1 game and yet came back out a couple of hours later to play a long doubles match despite limping around the court sometimes in that match. Then she came out in todays fixture against and retired early in the second set of her singles match against dulko yet comes out again in the doubles. I know the Hopman Cup is good tournament and she wants to do her best but I just dont understand why she is risking injury with the first Grand Slam of the year in 2 weeks and she scheduled to play in Sydney next week and even if they do go into the final they’ll have to play the US which means she’ll have to play S Williams and i bet she wont complete that match either if she even starts it, would it not better to rest her injury and give herself the best opertunity of doing well in the 1st Slam of the year. Can anyone explain her logic?

I think we should all admire her dedication and perseverance. Other players would have simply called it a day and asked to be replaced, but she kept going, and that’s what seperates her from the rest.

Based on what I read, she is injured and she is lucky to have a mixed doubles partner like Novak do all the running and be so dominant that she can stay stationary

While it may not be the best thing for her to do in a self-preservation way, it is very honorable and courageous of her to continue on playing for her country. I think the Serbian players have a lot of pride, and it shows in Jankovic risking herself to allow Serbia to stay in contention to win the Hopman Cup, and it also shows in Djokovic’s extra effort in covering more of his fair share of the court in the mixed doubles. It is heroic what they are both willing to do for their country. I can’t help but be reminded of Justine Henin retiring with a sore leg during the deciding match of the 2006 Fed Cup final against Schiavone, which of course handed Italy the title. That was just weak. Selfish and weak.
