What is the best powdered sports drink?

bada_bing2k4 asked:

I’m looking to buy a powdered sports drink, something like gatorade, to use during work outs and biking. There’s a lot of choices, some significantly more expensive to others, so I’d like to see what some people think before I buy something I’ve never tried before.

I’ve looked at Accelerade…it sounds good, and I really like that it contains protein, but it’s pretty expensive. I then read about Gatorade Endurance…it’s much cheaper, but contains no protein, and I’ve read some user reviews that say it’s very acidic and upsets the stomach. Don’t want that!

So if you have any opinions, please let me know. I want a powdered drink because you save a lot because of the quantity, and they will not contain high fructose corn syrup like ready made drinks do!
Woah - some of these answers are not on target. I’m looking for a sports drink primarily to use when biking (I go on hour long bike rides, 10-15 miles, sweat a TON), so that’s why I don’t just want water - I need to replenish electrolytes, which is why I want a sports drink. And what’s the main ingredient in all sports drinks, anyway? Water.

And to the guy who mentioned high fructose corn syrup in gatorade…that’s why I’m looking for a powder, I mentioned that near the end of my question details. There is nothing wrong with good sugar but HFCS is the worst sugar, which is why I’d like to avoid it.
Red Bull contains tons of caffeine and is absolutely not for hydration during endurance training. Cell-Tech is a premixed creatine formula, not a sports drink, and it’s extremely overpriced for what it contains, waaaay too much sugar for a normal sports drink, it’s entirely for post-weight lifting supplementation.
Also, for the guy who said to mix whey and casein protein, that is something you don’t want to do. Casein is slow absorbing because it gels in the stomach, resulting in slower digestion. If you take whey with it, this whey also gets gelled by the casein, preventing the beneficial fast absorption that you would take whey for in the first place. They are to be taken separately.
I make smoothies all the time, except in mine I put frozen strawberries and pineapple, a banana, ice cubes and orange juice. This however, is not a sports drink, certainly not something to drink during endurance sports (read something about fruit juice being detrimental to rehydration).

Gatorade hydrates for real. Nothing else I’ve used does it, if you REALLY want protein, mix some whey, egg, or casein protein powder in. But really, you can just take 20 grams each of whey and casein and whey protein before, and 60 grams of whey and fast-digesting carbs after. Protein during workout isn’t necessary.

Sports drinks don’t hydrate better than water, but you are more likely to drink larger volumes, which leads to better hydration. The typical sweet-tart taste combination doesn’t quench thirst, so you will keep drinking a sports drink long after water has lost its appeal. An attractive array of colors and flavors are available. You can get a carbohydrate boost from sports drinks, in addition to electrolytes which may be lost from perspiration, but these drinks tend to offer lower calories than juice or soft drinks

The natural choice for hydration is water. It hydrates better than any other liquid, both before and during exercise. Water tends to be less expensive and more available than any other drink. You need to drink 4-6 ounces of water for every 15-20 minutes of exercise. That can add up to a lot of water! While some people prefer the taste of water over other drinks, most people find it relatively bland and will stop drinking water before becoming fully hydrated. Water is the best, but it only helps you if you drink it.

It is all in a healthy diet. If you eat healthy and regularly then you should be ok just drinking water. Some salt on your foods will help you retain the fluids and eating fruit will give you natural energy. Make sure you eat atleast an hour before you exercise. Drink so much water that your urine is clear. Being properly hydrated makes all the difference in the world

make your own before you go. very easy and cheap, even a male jock can do this,
1 Bananna, 6-8oz home made yogurt, 2 to 4 oz blueberrys, strawberrys, or whatever is starting to get perfectly ripe.
6 to 8 ice cubes (blonds ask for recipie) Blend with blender
(goes faster that way) yes you can add rice bran, oat bran,, egg. bee pollen, honey, a wedge of lime,
    *******FREE YOURSELF FROM PROCESSED FOOD******
Its faster, cheaper, and better for you, And you can change your flavor every day.
