I don’t intend for this to be a ****** question so I hope know gets offended. But I mostly see African Americans play sports like basketball and football but are very little in numbers in hockey and now declining in baseball. Any body have any idea why?

Because the sports simply aren’t popular with young African Americans. Hockey costs quite a bit of money to play, plus you have to be at least slightly near an arena. My parents let me play when I was 8 and then pulled the plug because of the price.

It’s not a ****** question, but if you did some research and looked into the cost of gear as well as of adequate facilities which are not in every city, you’d be better informed eh

Henry has a unusual sense of humour .. I have to recommend this modification though - shouldn’t the NFL be the National Felon League, oh wait, they have lawyers in designer suits who get them off the hook. NFL could then be known as the National Fatass League

Also because of geography. Until about 15 years ago, hockey was a northern sport and on the beginner and high school level, it still really is. And being from the northeast US, I can tell you that outside of the urban areas, it is still pretty homogeneous, racially, in the northern states.

I think if you look at the lower levels in hock their is beginning to be more of an influx of all races. The NHL has made great strides in getting more grassroots leagues started and donating gear to inner city rinks is going to help.

As far as the NHL as a league is concerned, I think the number is so small because it is a global game. And let’s face it, there are not a lot of african americans in norway, sweden, russia, etc. And when you’re talking about taking the best of the best, the small number of african americans participating in North America is only amplified.

    Because Hockey is a White sport;

    NHL - National ****** League
    NBA- Nothin’ But African’s
    NFL - Ni99a’s Football league
MLB- Majority Latino’s Baseball… hope this helps..

About 52% of the players in the NHL were born in Canada. 30% were born in Europe,.predominately eastern and northern countries. The African ancestry in these areas is quite small. I will not use the United States term of African American because the percentage of American players is quite small as compared to other native groups,

Slavery was abolished in the British Empire long before Canada was settled and there were only small pockets of black population until quite recently. Thus hockey has only recently become a sport of the visible minorities. Second generation Canadians have began to adopt hockey as their sport over their parents Cricket and Soccer.

As the second and third generation new Canadians become hockey fans the numbers of Asian, Indo-Asian, and African descent players will continue to increase. The percentage of black hockey players in the NHL probably is quite close to the percentage of black persons in rural Minnesota and Michigan where many of the American born hockey players come from.

It’s because they either prefer to do other things or don’t have the talent to play the sport. If a guy wants to play basketball are you gonna force him to play baseball?

About half of the players in the NHL are European. How many black Swedes, Russians, Czechs, etc. have you come across in your lifetime?

I think it is because of the weather climate. Hockey is cold and we Africans are used to the Hot/summer weather.
Another thing is that the Hockey equipment is way too expensive while Basketball you just need a pair of shoes and a ball and you are set.
I have always wondered the same thing too.
And the Football one I don’t understand because Football equipment is also expensive but not as bad as Hockey.

That is why you see people play Basketball mostly in the Ghetto than Hockey. If you know where I am getting at.
