Why are high school sports so important?

Published by admin at 11:36 pm under Primary Secondary Education

I’ve never understood why sports are so important in high school. My school is only focused on sports and its really annoying. I mean its really just a game. I think sports are really boring to watch and i think its dumb that you get looked down upon if your not athletic. I don’t want to run around chasing a ball! Why can’t people just except that?

You know what, sports is a part of your curriculum. It is important as it helps build up you personality which plays an important role when you get to finish your school and then work. Perhaps you will ask Is there any relevance?. You know what, sports determines the patience and perseverance of a person and that is very important trait of a good person.

Sports are not and never will be a necessary part of life. Being active and leading a healthy lifestyle are important, but you don’t have to play sports to do that. Learning to work well with other people and team work are also important, but again, you can learn those skills without playing sports.

I always hated sports in high school too. I’m not competitive, the games were too confusing and the social groups in my class always turned the field into a battle game. Athletic people couldn’t understand why I didn’t give a damn whether the other side got a goal and why I refused to run faster - which didn’t help my social status.

These are the reasons why physical education isn’t a required course in grades 11 and 12 in Canada anymore.

If your school is very athletically inclined, maybe transfer to another school. Most schools make themselves known for one thing or another - mostly depending on what the administration thinks is most important or what part of the school a donor wants to donate money to. I went to a more academically inclined school, but some of my friends went to the more athletic one and others went to an artsy one which had the best fine arts courses in our district. Schools having a specific focus is important - as long as you’re going to one which has the focus you need.

I hear what you are saying. Some people like sports, some like playing chess, some like art, etc. Yet sports seem to get a lot of attention. Why don’t schools spend as much resources on the chess club or music classes?

    The bottom line…money.

Much of the public interests lies in sports. Businesses wouldn’t mind making donations to schools to fund sports. Sports is a money maker for schools when they host a game and people come to watch. Schools could also host a chess match, but not as much people are willing to pay to watch chess.

So the schools with the better gym, stadium and track and field will be able to host more sports that people are willing to come out and watch.

Until the day when the interest moves in another direction, sports will be the thing that schools can rely on to bring in the cash.
